                                                Welcome aboard!

Believe it or not the tower is now 11 years old, opened in 1999.  It's one of the tallest in the UK and stands at approx. 51 m

The Visual Control Room (VCR)  provides the controllers with unrestricted views of the whole airfield, and all the way out to the Peak District ...... on a good day!

Down below is the Approach Radar Room

The Aerodrome Traffic Monitor (ATM) is the tower controllers best friend, helping him/her to plan the traffic

The laser cloud base recorder is a useful bit of kit.... at the moment indicating cloud at 700 & 4000 feet. We have our own radar simulator which is very realistic, so we can practice emergencies, radar and radio failures etc.......great fun!
METCOM....displays the weather and airfield state for EMA, as well as transmitting it on the ATIS (128.225) This is what the radar controller is looking at, a range of about 30 - 40 miles VHF Direction Finder (VDF). This provides us with your QDM or QTE.
The radar controllers eye! The Marconi S511 primary radar scanner situated on the north side, backed up by secondary radar from the NATS radar at Claxby, Lincs. When we are in fog or low cloud the tower controller cannot see a thing. However, this Surface Movement Radar (SMR) shows us what is happening nearly 200' below us. In this case a B767 has just landed. This is the touch screen airfield lighting panel, which is quite clever because it can set the lighting to the correct settings for the given wx or time of day
This is the latest Frequentis 3020X Voice Communication System (VCS) recently installed at EMA.  Provides touch screen access to all frequencies, direct lines to other ATC units and much more. You can either walk up or take the lift, guess which is the more popular Finally spare a thought for these guys, 200 passengers, limited viz, high workload and totally IMC!
