Believe
it or not the tower is now 11 years old, opened in 1999. It's one of
the tallest in the UK and stands at approx. 51 m

The
Visual Control Room (VCR) provides the controllers with
unrestricted views of the whole airfield, and all the way out to the
Peak District ...... on a good day!

The
Aerodrome Traffic Monitor (ATM) is the tower controllers best friend,
helping him/her to plan the traffic

The
laser cloud base recorder is a useful bit of kit.... at the moment
indicating cloud at 700 & 4000 feet. |
We
have our own radar simulator which is very realistic, so we can
practice emergencies, radar and radio failures etc.......great fun! |

When
we are in fog or low cloud the tower controller cannot see a thing.
However, this Surface Movement Radar (SMR) shows us what is happening
nearly 200' below us. In this case a B767 has just landed. |
This
is the touch screen airfield lighting panel, which is quite clever because it can
set the lighting to the correct settings for the given wx or time of
day |

is the latest Frequentis 3020X Voice Communication System (VCS)
recently installed at EMA. Provides touch screen access to all
frequencies, direct lines to other ATC units and much more. |
You
can either walk up or take the lift, guess which is the more popular |
